Beholding the beauty of God in Jesus Christ and Becoming like Him.

The Bible teaches that God made the world to display His glory, or beautiful character and splendor. Genesis 1:26 reveals that humanity was given the privilege to reflect God more than anything in creation. We were made in His image to be like Him and represent Him.

Genesis 3 teaches that humanity sinned against God. Romans 3:23 describes sin as “falling short of the glory of God.” In other words, due to sin, humanity fell short and keeps falling short of God’s character and splendor that we were designed to reflect.

Instead of immediately disposing deformed image-bearers into eternal destruction, God graciously sent His Son Jesus Christ for the salvation of some. Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. Therefore, when Scripture refers to Jesus as the “image of God” (2 Cor. 4:4, Col.1:15, Heb. 1:3) it makes two profound points: (1) Jesus is the invisible God made visible (divine nature), and (2) Jesus is the perfect image-bearer (human nature). In other words, through Jesus we see God and the perfect example of what God designed human beings to be like.

Therefore, we should not be surprised to learn from 2 Cor. 3:18 that God recreates fallen human beings into His likeness as we: (1) behold the beauty of God through Jesus Christ, and (2) become like Him. We reflect upon Christ to reflect forth God. Or to say it another way, we behold the beauty of God through Jesus Christ to become like God. Our transformation into the image of God takes place in a progressive manner—glory by glory, degree by degree, or little by little.

Romans 5:2 identifies the Christian’s hope as “the glory of God.” In other words, our hope or confident expectation for the future is that we will see the glory of God (receiving the ultimate satisfaction of our hearts) and radiate the glory of God through our lives as perfect image-bearers.

In sum, God’s salvation begins with the forgiveness of our sins and continues through the recreation of deformed image-bearers into His dignified design for us, which will be perfected in the age to come. Therefore, the mission of Adoring Christ is to help women behold the beauty of God in Jesus Christ through biblical teaching so that we can progressively become more like Him.
